Recycling mobile phones for cash taking off!
More UK residents are recycling their mobile phones for cash. This is good news; the alternative is to simply throw them away. And that option still sends far too many mobile phones to area landfills and dumps, bad news for the environment.
But UK residents needn’t recycle their mobile phones simply because they want to do a good deed. Working with private recycling companies can also bring them some extra spending money.
A growing number of private companies in the UK will take old mobile phones in exchange for cash. Owners can expect to receive in the neighborhood of 50 pounds for a used mobile phone still in working order, and about 20 pounds for one that is not working.
This is a nice benefit today, when everyone’s looking to save as much money as possible. Recycling mobile phones requires little effort. It’s almost like getting money for doing nothing at all.
The good news is that more people are getting this message. For instance, a recycling company called The Recycling Appeal has raised more than 2 million pounds for UK charities from the mobile phones it has recycled since 1999. The recycler Each One Counts has raised more than 3 million pounds from recycling phones since its program started back in 1995.
And these are just two examples. More than 80 percent of all mobile phone parts are recyclable. So every time consumers do work with a phone-recycling company – whether for charitable reasons or a monetary reward – they are doing their part to conserve space in UK landfills.
Unfortunately, the news isn’t all good. The vast majority of UK residents still know little about the merits of recycling old mobile phones. As proof of this, one has to look no further than a recent study by mobile phone manufacturer Nokia. This study found that only 3 percent of mobile phone users actually recycle their old phones.
The study also found that a total of 75 percent of mobile phone users had no idea at all of how to recycle their old mobile phones.
Until these numbers improve, the vast majority of old mobile phones will either be tossed in the trash or left forgotten in the bottom of a desk drawer in the corner of an office desk.
If you’d rather be part of the solution, and earn some extra spending money while you’re at, log onto the Internet and search for any of the many private companies that are now offering cash for old mobile phones. They’re easy to find, and more of them seem to be popping up on the Web on a daily basis.
To take advantage of one of these programs simply log onto a site and type in your phone’s name and model number. You’ll then receive a financial offer. You can decide whether you like the offer. If you do, accept it, mail in the used mobile phone and then wait for your extra cash to arrive.
Just make sure to remove your mobile phone’s SIM card before sending it to a recycler. You want to make sure that your phone numbers and contact information remains private. Most recyclers will simply destroy any SIM cards that they do receive.
As UK residents get ever more green, the hope is that they’ll turn more often to recycling their old mobile phones. You can help lead this movement by setting a good example. Next time you want to upgrade to that new mobile phone, think about the environment first and find a recycling company. You can then sell your old mobile phone for cash. What could be better?
